Mitchell EMC Outage Affects Thousands in Southwest Georgia

A powerful storm swept through southwest Georgia on Wednesday night, leaving thousands without electricity. Mitchell EMC reported that nearly 8.5 percent of its customers in Decatur County were affected by the outage, while Grady County saw a staggering 57.9 percent of its customers lose power.

Mitchell County was also heavily impacted, with 7.5 percent of its residents experiencing an interruption in their electricity supply. Thomas County was not immune to the outages either, with 25 percent of its customers affected.

The city of Thomasville was particularly hard hit, with over 1,700 residents without power. The outages were reported across multiple counties, including Seminole, Miller, Lowndes, Brooks, Berrien, Echols, Clinch, and Grady.

In addition to Mitchell EMC, other electric co-ops and utilities in the region also reported widespread outages. Suwannee Valley Electric Co-op saw a relatively small 2.2 percent of its customers affected in Lafayette County, while Talquin reported outages affecting 3.61 percent of its customers in Gadsden County.

Talquin's outages also impacted Leon and Wakulla counties, with smaller percentages of customers affected. Suwannee County was not immune to the outages either, with 0.1 percent of its residents experiencing an interruption in their electricity supply.

Florida was also affected by the severe weather, with Jefferson County seeing a significant 11.1 percent of its customers without power. Other areas in Florida reported smaller outages, including Liberty and Madison counties.

The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but it's clear that the storm caused widespread disruptions to the region's electrical grid. Crews are working diligently to restore power to affected residents as quickly and safely as possible.
